BEROALDUS, PHILIPPUS. Orationes Multifariae . . . cum Appendicula
aliarum quoque oratiuncularum. (Bologna), Bened. Hectoris, 1 November.
1500. 4to. Rom. 128 leaves. Device at end. Boards.
Hain 2955 ; B.M. Cat. VI., 846 ; G.K.D.W. 414S.
Thia volume eontains Beroaldus’ speeehes and several other pieees in prose and verse, in-
cluding the “ Nuptiae Bentivolorura ” (with a viyid descriptiori of a pageant) ; among the speeehes
is the address of weloome to Thonias Anglicus (Aleock), who was eleeted Rector of Bologna Uni-
versity in 1489 — The GKW only mentions 14 copics of this, the rarest of the XVth cent.
editions. The most interesting of the speeehes are: 1. Oratio dicta apud rectorem scho
lastici conventus ineuntem scholasticam prefecturam, in praise of Thomas Anglicus,
born in England from a noble family and with a short historical and appraising account
of that country. 2. Oratio ad Tribunos plebis giving interesting details about the work
of the civil magistrates. 3. Speeehes in praise of Lud. Sforza. Several of these are of
legal interest. Part of the poems are Latin translations of Italian originals by Petrarca
and Boccaccio. As is known Beroaldus (1453—1505) who was a professor in linguisties
and literature in his native town of Bologna, was also one of the most prominent
humanists of his time. His editions of the classics can be considered to be the best of the
XVIth century. — A very fine copy of an interesting and uncommon book. ■— A copy
